L-Glutamine amino acid powder Protein makes up the structure of all cells and tissues in the body, including muscle tissue, internal organs, tendons, skin, hair and nails. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and there are 20 of them – 12 can be made in the body and so are referred to as “non-essential amino acids”, while the other 8 are known as “essential amino acids” (as they must be sourced from the diet). Glutamine – the most abundant free amino acid in muscle cells – has traditionally been considered to be a non-essential amino acid under this classification. However, it is also viewed as as “conditionally essential” after critical illness, stress, and injury. Our body’s own levels of glutamine can come under strain in circumstances of metabolic stress, including injuries, illness and even severe emotional distress.

What does the “L” in L-Glutamine stand for?
L-Glutamine, the natural form of glutamine, is synthesised from 3 other amino acids: ornithine, arginine and proline. It is also a component of glutathione, a nutrient present in virtually every cell. The key difference between glutamine and L-glutamine is that glutamine is an amino acid, whereas L-glutamine is an isomer of glutamine. Some molecules exist in two different forms in the body. They are mirror images and yet not identical to each other – a good example would be your right hand and your left hand. Glutamine is one such molecule, as are 18 of the other 19 amino acids. The “L” in L-glutamine stands for levo or left. Its mirror image is referred to as d-glutamine, with the “D” standing for dextro, or right. Although glutamine exists in a particular ratio of each right and left in the body, L-Glutamine is the one that is widely considered to be of most use, because it is more biologically active and performs more functions in the body. This L-Glutamine food supplement is sourced from fermented glucose and is therefore suitable for vegetarians, vegans and those following a kosher diet.
